OUTLINE:
Attention Grabber/Intro:
- Have any of you ever really wanted to be on the winning team for backyard volleyball games?
- I am sure at least one of you has and today im going to teach you how…
- Overhand serve is the key to success in volleyball and today I am going to teach you how to successfully serve a volleyball overhand.
Body:
- First you want to obtain all of your necessary materials this includes
- A volleyball and a court
- After you have gotten everything, you want to position yourself a couple steps behind the end line of the court
- This is the back line of the court
- This is very important because if you serve in front or step on the line you will get called for a foot fault and the other team will receive the point
- This is the back line of the court
- After you have done this you want to think about the toss this is the first action in serving a volleyball
- You first want to decide what hand you are going to toss with
- If you are going to be hitting the ball with your right hand you want to toss the ball with your left and vise versa if you are going to be hitting the ball with your left hand
- Some people also the ball with both hands, but I personally find this uncomfortable
- After you have decided what hand you are going to toss the ball with you want to practice your toss
- You want your toss to be just right
- You want your toss to be in front of the shoulder you are hitting the ball with and around the height your hand will be when it comes in contact with the ball
- If it is too low then the odds of the ball not going over the net are much higher
- If it is too far back the ball would likely go over the net like a “rainbow” which are very easy to pass and wouldn’t make it hard for the other team
- You first want to decide what hand you are going to toss with
- Once you have practiced your toss, you then want to add in your step
- People hitting the ball with their right hand should be stepping with their left foot and vise versa for people hitting with their left hand
- Your step is also very important in making a good overhand serve
- If your step is too small you might not have enough power to get the ball over the net
- If your step is too big you can easily lose balance which can also lead to a poor serve
- After you have practiced both your toss and step it is time to add in actually hitting the ball
- You want to hit the ball right in the middle and with and open hand
- Doing these two things will help you get the best serve and allow the most power to be driven into the ball
- Sometimes you can accidentally hit the ball with the wrong part of your hand and you will be able to tell because it wont go straight or won’t make it over the net
Closing:
- You now have all three actions that come into play when over hand serving a volleyball
- The toss, step, and hit
- All of these steps sound easy on the surface but in order to have a good serve all throughout you need all of these actions to happen just right
- I hope that all of you can now use this new skill to your advantage at your next family BBQ when you are playing backyard volleyball

Reflection (Journal #9):
I believe that my second speech on teaching a skill went much better than my first one. I felt much more prepared and really enjoyed teaching everyone how to overhand serve a volleyball. Since I knew the skill so well I felt much more comfortable delivering the speech and felt as though I knew the subject matter really well. I also spent a lot of time on making my video and practicing which I think made my speech much better. I think I still need to get more comfortable with not looking at my outline because even though I knew my subject really well I get nervous and look at my outline way more than I need to. According to the feedback from my peers I also need to work on not using so many filler words which I believe will come with practice and getting more experience and comfortable with public speaking. Overall I think my audience really liked my speech and found it easy to follow. One person even commented on how they wish that they had been taught how to overhand serve a volleyball the way I taught it because I made it really easy to understand. I also felt much more organized with this speech and hope to continue to get better and more comfortable with public speaking as we continue to practice more.
